This week, we had the pleasure of speaking with Ruth Verastegui, Senior Risk Officer Latin America and the Caribbean, based in Lima, Peru.

  • What do you like the most at BlueOrchard?

“I love working in an environment that embraces a high level of diversity among its people and operations. The invaluable learning experience that comes with exposure to diverse markets is something I deeply appreciate. Being exposed to diverse markets enables me to broaden my horizons and gain insights into nuances specific to each region. The chance to engage with investees from various countries provides me with a deeper appreciation for the challenges and opportunities that exist in different parts of the world. This exposure enhances not only my professional growth, but also my cultural awareness and ability to navigate complex international contexts.”

  • Why did you join BlueOrchard?

“I was looking for a way to make a difference. After working in the corporate banking industry for so many years, I started to wonder if there would be a way for my job to have a direct and material impact on other economic sectors. This thought lingered in my mind until it materialised through the opportunity to work for BlueOrchard, where I can do what I love the most: risk management.”

  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to people interested in impact investing?

“To thoroughly research and understand the social and environmental issues we are passionate about, ensuring that our financial profitability is accompanied by a greater sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. By doing so, we can align our investments with our personal values and contribute to the causes we care deeply about.”

  • What is the biggest global challenge in your view?
“In my opinion, one of the most pressing global challenges we face today is climate change. As someone who was born in a country that is frequently affected by weather phenomena like El Niño, I have personally witnessed the significant impacts of climate change. These impacts extend far beyond just rising global temperatures and encompass a range of issues, including more frequent and intense natural disasters, sea-level rise, loss of biodiversity, and disruptions to ecosystems and human livelihoods. It is crucial for us to acknowledge and address these challenges in order to protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future for all.”
